What is the Canada-Alberta Job Grant?
The Canada-Alberta Job Grant (CAJG) “helps employers invest in training for current and future employees”.
“The goal of the CAJG is to increase participation of Albertans in the labour force by helping them develop the skills they need to find and keep a job”. Employers can also make use of the CAJG to “…invest in training that is better aligned to job opportunities” or growing needs in their business as they develop.
The CAJG may provide up to:
• 2/3rds (66%) funding for course fees, or up to • 100% funding if the student/trainee is “unemployed” for at least 30 consecutive days prior to the funding application date.
Eligible students/trainees may include:
• Yourself (conditions apply)• A family member (must have been an ‘employee’ for at least 90 days prior to the application date, proof of paid “employment” will be required)• A current employee• A new employee recently hired, or• A new employee who must complete the training before they actually start working for you
Find out if you qualify for the Canada-Alberta Job Grant. Here are some of the basic requirements:
If you are a business owner wanting to take a course for yourself and you are a Sole-Proprietor or in a Partnership (not a corporation), you may qualify for funding if your business :
- Has no more than 3 employees plus yourself , and
- Has been operating for at least 1 year, and
- Has a trade name registered under the “Partnership Act (Alberta) or
- You must provide a copy of the prior years T2125 Statement of Business or Professional Activities that you filed with your personal income tax return
Is in “good standing” with WCB-Alberta and has either an "Exemption Letter", or, a "Clearance Letter" and one of the following:
Copy of federal payroll deductions, or,
- GST Registration, or
- T2125 Statement of Business or Professional Activities as mentioned above
If your business is a Corporation, you may qualify for funding if your business has been operating for at least 1 year and, if you have a WCB Account, you are in "good standing" including premiums up to date.
If you are a business owner wanting to apply for the grant for a “family member”, the individual must have been “employed” with you for at least 90 days prior to the grant application. That means source deductions will have been deducted if applicable and a T4 will be issued at year end
If you are a business owner (sole-proprietor, partnership, corporation) you can apply for the grant for a:
- Current employee, or a
- New employee that has been unemployed:
- Grant may cover up to 100% of the course fees
- They must have been unemployed for 30 consecutive days prior to the application date
- If training is required before you hire them, then a conditional offer of employment letter or letter of employment will be required
Temporary Foreign Workers, unemployed family members, and self-employed contractors that work for you are not eligible for the CAJG funding.
